Core Technology & Working Principle

Grinding sulphur is a heat problem wearing the clothes of a fineness problem. The machine has to remove the energy it puts in, or the material stops behaving like a solid.

▲ Heat Removal Before Fineness

Mechanical energy put into the slurry leaves as heat. With a melting point near 115 degrees C the cooling path has to be sized for the power input, not added afterwards.

▲ Immersion Grinding Keeps the Slurry Wet

The basket grinds below the liquid surface, so the material stays a slurry throughout and no dust cloud forms at the tank mouth.

▲ Temperature Interlock and Clamp Sensing

A temperature reading above the set point stops the drive, and a proximity sensor prevents the basket running unless the vessel is locked. Both are guarding against outcomes that are hard to clear.

Three parts of the machine carry the duty on this material: the basket internals, the cooling path, and the interlocks.

Pins, Screen and a Clear Slot

The pins drive the media and the wedge-wire screen holds it inside the basket. The slot is the part that tells you the batch is in trouble: if the slurry stops passing, the temperature climbs next.

Lift Column and Cooling Connections

The lift raises the basket clear for washdown and media change. The cooling water connections to the basket jacket run along the same column, and their bore is what limits how much heat can be taken out.

Technical FAQ

The questions asked before grinding sulphur or a similar heat-sensitive solid wet.

Why does sulphur need temperature control during grinding?

Because elemental sulphur melts at about 115 degrees C. Grinding puts mechanical energy into the slurry and that energy leaves as heat, so a basket mill running without enough cooling can take the slurry to the melting range. Once sulphur softens it smears across the media and the screen instead of fracturing, and the batch has to be stopped and cleaned out.

Is sulphur flammable during wet grinding?

Sulphur is a combustible solid and sulphur dust in air can form an explosive atmosphere, so the risk is real but it is a dust and static problem rather than a solvent one. Wet grinding keeps the sulphur in a slurry, which removes most of the dust cloud. The remaining measures are bonding and grounding of the equipment and avoiding dry powder accumulation around the tank. Explosion-proof configurations are available upon request.

What viscosity range suits a basket mill for sulphur slurries?

Sulphur is normally ground into a liquid carrier at low to medium viscosity, which sits well inside the range a basket mill handles. Very high solids loadings raise the viscosity and should be checked against the model's handling capacity before the batch size is fixed.

How is the screen kept clear when grinding sulphur?

By keeping the slurry cool and by checking the wedge-wire slot at washdown. A blocked screen stops the recirculation through the basket, and with sulphur that usually means the batch has started to soften. Screen condition is the first thing to inspect if the fineness stops falling.

Does the tank clamping interlock matter more for this material?

It matters for any heavy basket, and more so where a hot or smeared batch would be difficult to clear. The interlock prevents the drive from running unless the vessel is locked in position, which stops the basket from being lowered into an unsecured tank.

What batch size range do the PZM models cover?

Handling capacity runs from 10 to 1,500 liters across nine models, with basket capacity from 1 to 70 liters. Choose the model from the batch volume and the basket-to-batch ratio, then confirm the cooling arrangement for the heat load the material produces.
