Bead Mill

Bead mill, also known as sand mill or pearl mill, is a type of ultrafine wet grinding machine. It is an efficient and high-energy wet grinding machine with multiple cooling systems, automatic stop control system, and continuous production system. Widely used in various industries such as paints, coatings, colorants, inks, papermaking, adhesives, chemicals, new materials, etc. By grinding the medium (grinding beads) rotating at high speed inside the grinding chamber, materials are crushed or dispersed to achieve micrometer to nanometer and decimeter levels.

Working Principle

The horizontal bead mill is a wet grinding machine used for continuous production of solid-liquid material. The motor is driven at high speed to drive the central axis in the grinding chamber and other forms of grinding device such as grinding pins or grinding discs on the axis to rotate at high speed. The grinding zirconium beads in the grinding chamber start to run rapidly and collide with each other due to the rotational power and centrifugal force. The strong shear force, impact force, and impact force break the material particles into smaller sizes and achieve a certain fineness requirement. After the grinding is completed, the zirconium beads are still in the grinding chamber due to the fine gap technical of the sieve, while the material is discharged through the sieve.

Different materials of grinding pins/discs

Based on the customer's production process and material characteristics, we will customize the bead mill specifically, such as capacity, size, important grinding material selection, type of grinding medium, process temperature, wear rate, etc.

Alloy Steel
It is the most commonly used material for grinding disc and pins inner chamber in bead mills because of its good corrosion resistance and adequate strength.

Polyurethane
The lining of the grinding chamber can be coated with polyurethane, suitable for non-metallic mineral materials it's more cost-effective than ceramic material.
Tungsten carbide
It’s hardness and thermal conductivity is much better than hard alloy. It won’t get rusty too which is the best material for disc type and pin type bead mill.

Notice of Using Bead Mill

The pumping speed of the air pump should not be too fast. If the pump speed is too fast, the pressure inside the chamber will be too high(Please check in a time whether the pressure on the pressure gauge exceeds the limit pressure of 0.4 or not)which will push the beads towards the screen sieve and make it easier to block, especially if the material viscosity is high. After grinding the material, the bead mill isn’t used for a few time, need clean the material remained in the pipe of the air pump in time.


When the current and voltage are unstable, it will cause damage to the motor and abnormal shutdown.


When the machine is used for a long time and the vulnerable operation buttons on the control panel are damaged, it is necessary to replace a new one in time. Otherwise, when the customer starts the machine to grind materials, liquid will inevitably enter, which will cause the machine to leak electricity and shut down.

We suggest that the speed of the bead mill should not be lower than 1000 rpm, so that the screen sieve is not easily block. If there is concern about high material temperature and the speed being lower than 1000 rpm, the beads may become block easier. In this case, the screen sieve should be disassembled and cleaned more regularly.

If the speed is below 1000 rpm, it is important to pay attention to whether the coolant liquid in the mechanical seal pipe is circulating or not. If the coolant liquid is not circulating, the mechanical seal will heat up, be easily damaged, and have a short service life. Therefore, it is necessary to accelerate the shaft speed.

l After grinding the material for a period of time, if you found that the discharge of the material has decreased, the sieve should be disassembled and cleaned in time. Do not wait until the screen sieve is completely blocked before cleaning. (If the material is block in the chamber, the pressure on the pressure gauge will also increase higher)

When adding beads to the bead mill, too many beads causing blockage at the bead addition port, the machine can be run at low speed to make it easier for the beads to enter.
