Core Technology & Working Principle

A basket mill works the other way round from a horizontal bead mill: the mill travels to the batch instead of the batch travelling through the mill. The grinding chamber is a basket suspended from a hydraulic column, loaded with micro beads and lowered directly into the mobile tank. Production flexibility comes from that geometry — one machine can serve many tanks, and every color change is a washdown rather than a line flush. The engineering challenge it creates is separation: beads must stay inside the basket while finished slurry leaves, which is what the bottom dynamic screen is for.

▲ Self-Recirculating Immersion Vortex

A top suction impeller generates a vortex that continuously pulls raw slurry into the basket. Milling pins inside the double-walled chamber energise the micro beads, and the refined slurry exits through the bottom dynamic screen into the tank below.

▲ Bottom Cowles Disc Closes the Loop

A Cowles dispersing disc on the lower shaft drives material outward and back up the tank wall, so the whole batch turns over instead of stratifying around the basket. Pre-dispersion and fine milling happen in the same circulation, without a second machine.

▲ Hydraulic Lift for Fast Washdown

The electro-hydraulic column raises the basket clear of the tank, and the operator lowers it into an auxiliary solvent container for residue-free cleaning. No external pump or hose needs to be dismantled between colors.

Double-Walled Grinding Basket

The basket carries its own cooling jacket and a bottom dynamic screen. Pins are available in hardened alloy, polyurethane, silicon carbide or zirconia to suit abrasive and color-sensitive formulations.

Bottom Cowles Dispersing Disc

Mounted on the same shaft below the basket, the Cowles disc keeps the full batch in circulation and prevents heavy pigments from settling in the tank dead zone.

What is an immersion basket mill and how does it operate?

An immersion basket mill (PZM series) integrates high-shear pre-dispersion and fine wet bead milling in a single mobile vessel. A top vortex impeller draws liquid and solids into a double-walled chamber loaded with micro beads. After intense milling, the slurry discharges through a bottom screen into the tank where a lower Cowles disc maintains full batch turnover.

Why is the PZM basket mill ideal for multi-color and frequent batch changeovers?

Because milling takes place inside mobile tanks without external feed pumps or hoses, there is zero material trapped in transfer lines. Cleaning is quick because the basket is lifted hydraulically and run in an auxiliary washdown container, eliminating cross-color contamination.

What viscosity range and batch capacities can the PZM series process?

The PZM series processes fluid to moderately viscous slurries up to 8,000 cps. Standard models range from 2.2 kW (PZM50 for 10-30 L pilot batches) up to 55 kW (PZM1500 for 1,000-1,500 L commercial production runs).

How does the double-walled jacket control batch temperature?

Both the immersion basket and the mobile mixing tank feature double-walled cooling jackets. Connecting chilled water or cooling glycol dissipates mechanical friction heat directly at the grinding zone, protecting thermal-sensitive resins and colorants.

Are explosion-proof configurations available for solvent-borne paints and inks?

Yes. PZM basket mills can be supplied with cast aluminium control consoles, explosion-proof drive motors and pneumatic tank clamping interlocks.
