Horizontal Sand Mill: Specifications & Price Guide 2026

An engineering guide to industrial wet grinding. Discover how POLYC's disc and pin type horizontal sand mills continuously process paints, inks, and agricultural suspensions with unmatched energy efficiency.

In the global coatings and chemical industries, achieving an ultra-fine, stable particle size distribution (PSD) is the ultimate manufacturing goal. For decades, manufacturers relied on vertical "sand mills" using natural Ottawa sand. Today, modern Horizontal Sand Mills (also known as bead mills) utilizing high-density zirconia beads have revolutionized the wet grinding process.

By orienting the grinding chamber horizontally, gravity settlement is completely eliminated. The grinding media is distributed evenly across the entire shear zone, allowing for chamber loading volumes up to 80-85%. Combined with advanced disc or pin rotor geometries spinning at peripheral speeds up to 16 m/s, POLYC horizontal sand mills shatter pigment agglomerates in a fraction of the time required by legacy vertical machines.

As a leading sand mill manufacturer, POLYC has delivered over 2,000 horizontal grinding units globally. From 5L laboratory setups to 1,000L mass-production units arranged in continuous cascaded lines, we provide true source-factory engineering.

How to Select the Right Sand Mill for Your Process

Scenario A: Architectural Paints & Coatings

Process Profile: Mass-volume production requiring excellent opacity, stability, and fineness between 10 to 20 μm.

Optimal Configuration: PZP Disc Sand Mill. Offers the highest flow rate and best energy efficiency per ton produced for standard fineness requirements.

Scenario B: Premium Printing Inks & Inkjets

Process Profile: Highly concentrated pigments demanding extremely strong color development and sub-micron (<2 μm) particle sizes.

Optimal Configuration: PZB Pin Sand Mill. The intense kinetic energy generated by the pin rotor shatters hard agglomerates rapidly, yielding a razor-thin particle size distribution.

Scenario C: Agricultural SC (Suspension Concentrates)

Process Profile: Processing highly abrasive crystalline active ingredients in water to reach D90 < 5 μm for optimal field spraying efficacy.

Optimal Configuration: Cascaded Sand Mills (Disc into Pin). Uses a 1.5mm bead disc mill for rough grinding, directly feeding into a 0.6mm bead pin mill for fine grinding in a single pass.

Scenario D: Electronic Pastes & TiO2 Slurries

Process Profile: White or transparent materials where the slightest graying from metal wear will ruin the batch.

Optimal Configuration: Ceramic Sand Mill. Fully lined with Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Zirconia inner chambers and rotors to guarantee zero metallic contamination and superior heat transfer.

Engineering Architecture: Mechanics of the Horizontal Sand Mill

1. Fluid Kinematics: Disc vs. Pin Energy Transfer

A Disc rotor transfers energy through viscous drag; it accelerates the fluid, which then accelerates the grinding beads. This is highly efficient for general grinding. A Pin rotor transfers energy through direct mechanical impact; the hardened pegs hit the beads directly. This bypasses fluid resistance, providing the massive kinetic force required to smash sub-micron agglomerates that discs cannot break.

2. Advanced Dynamic Centrifugal Separation

To grind to nano-levels, you must use micro-beads (0.1 mm to 0.4 mm). Standard static wedge-wire screens will instantly blind (clog) when attempting to retain beads this small. POLYC integrates a hollow, high-speed dynamic centrifugal separator cage at the discharge end. This spinning cage physically repels the micro-beads outward via centrifugal force, while allowing the finished slurry to flow smoothly through the center.

3. Multi-Zone Thermal Cooling

High kinetic energy generates intense friction heat, which can damage heat-sensitive resins or flash off solvents. POLYC mills feature extreme cooling architecture: a high-flow spiral water jacket wrapped around the outer cylinder, combined with inner-rotor cooling pathways (coolant flows directly through the main shaft), ensuring continuous low-temperature discharge.

What Factors Drive the Price of a Sand Mill?

1. Rotor Geometry & CNC Machining

Disc mills are simpler to manufacture and highly cost-effective. Pin mills require 5-axis CNC machining to seamlessly integrate hardened pegs and maintain absolute dynamic balance at 16 m/s, representing a higher initial investment.

2. Contact Metallurgy

Using standard wear-resistant steel alloy is the baseline. Upgrading the internal chamber and rotor to high-grade Silicon Carbide (SiC) or Polyurethane (PU) significantly increases the cost but guarantees a metal-free, pure white end product.

3. Mechanical Seal Integrity

Industrial horizontal mills rely on heavy-duty, cartridge-style double mechanical seals. Premium POLYC models integrate stainless steel pressurized barrier fluid tanks, preventing seal wear and hazardous solvent leakage over years of operation.

4. Control Systems & Explosion-Proofing

Upgrading from basic push-button starters to a full Siemens PLC touchscreen with temperature/pressure interlocks, along with certified ATEX / Ex-d explosion-proof motors for solvent-based environments, adds to the total system value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Sand Mill and a Bead Mill?
In the modern chemical processing industry, the terms are used interchangeably. Historically, "sand mills" used natural silica sand as the grinding media in vertical open tanks. Today, modern "horizontal bead mills" utilize dense, engineered zirconia or glass beads in closed pressurized chambers, offering vastly superior efficiency and fineness.
Why is a horizontal orientation better than vertical?
Gravity causes grinding beads in a vertical mill to settle at the bottom, creating uneven wear, dense clogging zones, and poor grinding efficiency at the top of the chamber. Horizontal mills eliminate gravity settlement, allowing for 80% chamber loading, uniform media distribution, and significantly faster processing times with narrower particle size distributions.
Can I use a sand mill to grind highly viscous pastes?
No. Sand mills rely on fluid flow to carry the product through the grinding media and out the dynamic separation screen. Highly viscous, non-flowing pastes (like offset ink or silicone sealant) will instantly choke the screen and over-pressurize the chamber. For pastes, you must use a mechanical nip-shear device like a Three Roller Mill or a Kneader.
What size grinding beads should I use?
The rule of thumb is that the grinding bead should be approximately 10 to 30 times larger than your target particle size. For coarse agricultural suspensions, 1.0–1.4 mm beads are common. For standard paints, 0.8–1.2 mm. For nano-grade inkjet inks, micro-beads of 0.2–0.4 mm must be used inside a Pin-Type mill equipped with dynamic centrifugal separation.
