Vertical Bead Mill & Basket Mill: Specifications & Price Guide 2026

The definitive engineering guide to modern immersion milling. Discover why paint and pigment manufacturers use hydraulic lifting basket mills to conquer fragmented orders, small batches, and frequent color changeovers.

While horizontal bead mills dominate mass, continuous production, they harbor a severe weakness: cleaning. If a paint factory receives fragmented orders requiring them to switch from producing carbon black ink to pure white TiO2 paint on the same day, flushing the extensive pumps, hoses, and sealed horizontal chambers wastes hours of production time and hundreds of liters of expensive solvent.

To solve the small-batch and multi-color dilemma, POLYC engineers the modern evolution of the vertical bead mill: the Hydraulic Lifting Basket Mill (Immersion Mill). This revolutionary design completely eliminates material feeding pumps and external pipework. The grinding chamber (the basket) is lowered directly into a mobile mixing vessel. An internal suction impeller draws the slurry through the dense zirconia bead bed and expels it out the sides, simultaneously acting as a high-speed disperser and a fine grinder.

When the batch is finished, the basket simply lifts out hydraulically. You can spin the rotor in a small tub of solvent to clean it in under 5 minutes, swap in a new mobile tank, and immediately begin grinding the next color.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Basket: How to Choose

Scenario A: Frequent Color Changeovers

Process Profile: Custom tinting shops or specialized ink producers that run 3 to 5 different colors on the same machine within a single day.

Optimal Configuration: Basket Mill. Simply lift the basket, immerse it in a 50L drum of solvent, run it for 5 minutes, and it is 100% clean and ready for the next color. Zero piping to flush.

Scenario B: Fragmented Batch Sizes

Process Profile: Producing varying batch sizes ranging from 200L up to 1,000L depending on customer demand, without wanting to maintain multiple machine sizes.

Optimal Configuration: Basket Mill. Because it operates directly inside mobile tanks, you can wheel in a 300L tank for a small order, and later wheel in a 1,000L tank for a larger order using the exact same mill.

Scenario C: Single-Product Mass Production

Process Profile: Running standard white architectural paint or continuous agricultural SC formulas 24/7 without changing the recipe.

Optimal Configuration: Horizontal Bead Mill. Once piped into a continuous circulation tank, the horizontal mill provides the highest throughput per kWh and the tightest particle size distribution for non-stop runs.

Scenario D: High Viscosity Paste Formulations

Process Profile: Thick pastes over 20,000 cPs (like UV offset inks or heavy putty) that do not self-level and will not flow through a screen.

Optimal Configuration: Three Roller Mill or Kneader. Neither basket mills nor horizontal bead mills can process extreme pastes; they will simply cavitate or block.

Engineering Architecture: How Immersion Milling Works

1. Fluid Kinematics: The Self-Pumping Vortex

Unlike horizontal mills that require a diaphragm pump to push fluid, a basket mill is self-pumping. A powerful suction impeller (a Cowles disc) sits just beneath the basket. As it spins, it creates a massive downward vortex, violently sucking the slurry from the top of the tank, pulling it through the dense bed of zirconia beads inside the basket, and expelling it out through the side wedge-wire screens. This guarantees hundreds of passes per hour.

2. Pre-Dispersion & Fine Milling Integration

In a standard setup, you must buy a High-Speed Disperser to wet the powder, then pump it to a Bead Mill. The Basket Mill eliminates the disperser entirely. You dump the powder directly into the mobile tank while the basket mill's bottom suction disc acts as the primary disperser. Once wetted, the slurry is continuously pulled through the internal grinding pins for final nano-milling.

3. The Cleaning Advantage (Zero Pipework)

Because all grinding occurs within the immersed basket, there are no feeding pipes, no mechanical seal cavities exposed to pressure, and no external pumps. Cleaning is exceptionally fast: lift the hydraulic column, swap the product tank for a small drum of cleaning solvent, run the mill for a few minutes to flush the basket, and the machine is immediately ready for a completely different product line.

What Determines the Price of a Basket Mill?

1. Hydraulic Lifting Column

To immerse a heavy grinding basket into a 1,000L tank safely, the machine requires a massive, precision-machined hydraulic gantry. Upgrading to heavier, vibration-free columns with automated safety locks increases the initial capital cost but ensures decades of stable operation.

2. Contact Metallurgy (Zirconia / SiC)

Standard basket mills use wear-resistant steel inner pins. For premium white paints or metallic inks where graying must be avoided, upgrading the internal rotor and pins to Zirconia or Silicon Carbide adds a premium to the price but guarantees zero metallic contamination.

3. Vacuum & Explosion-Proof (ATEX) Features

If processing solvent-based inks, the machine must be fitted with certified Ex-d explosion-proof motors and VFD cabinets. Additionally, configuring the machine with a specialized, sealable cover that descends with the basket to allow for deep vacuum degassing pushes the unit into a higher price tier.

4. Cooling Jacket Complexity

Milling generates severe heat. A standard mill relies only on the cooling jacket of the mobile tank. Advanced POLYC basket mills feature internal cooling—where chilled water is routed directly through the hollow walls of the immersion basket itself, exponentially increasing heat dissipation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Basket Mill and a Vertical Bead Mill?
A traditional vertical bead mill is a continuous machine: you pump fluid into the bottom of a sealed, upright tank, and it exits through a top screen. A Basket Mill (Immersion Mill) is a batch machine: the grinding chamber (basket) is open at the top and bottom and is lowered directly into your mobile mixing tank, acting as both a disperser and a mill simultaneously.
Does a Basket Mill grind as fine as a Horizontal Bead Mill?
For standard paints, inks, and coatings (5 to 15 μm), the Basket Mill performs identically to a horizontal mill. However, for true nano-dispersion (< 1 μm) using 0.2 mm micro-beads, a Horizontal Pin Bead Mill is vastly superior because it possesses the dynamic separation cage necessary to handle tiny beads without clogging.
Can I use a Basket Mill for high-viscosity pastes like offset ink?
No. Basket mills rely on a suction impeller to pull fluid through the bead basket. Highly viscous, non-flowing pastes (like offset ink or thick putty) cannot be sucked into the basket; the impeller will simply carve a hole in the material (cavitation). For thick pastes, you must use a Three Roller Mill or a Butterfly Kneader.
How does the basket prevent beads from escaping into the batch tank?
The exterior of the grinding basket is constructed from precision V-shaped wedge-wire screens. The gap of these screens (typically 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm) is machined to be precisely half the diameter of the grinding beads inside the basket, allowing the fluid to rush out while trapping the beads securely inside.
