An engineering guide to high-intensity fluidization mixing. Discover how POLYC Ploughshare Mixers reduce dry powder blending times from 45 minutes to under 5 minutes while crushing hard agglomerates.
In the bulk solids processing industry, standard Ribbon Blenders are reliable but notoriously slow. When plant managers need to increase daily throughput, or when process engineers need to distribute micro-trace additives (like pigments, short fibers, or active pharmaceutical ingredients) into massive batches of bulk powder, they face a critical bottleneck: "How do we achieve 99.8% uniformity without taking 45 minutes per batch, and how do we prevent sticky powders from clumping?"
The solution is mechanical fluidization. The POLYC Ploughshare Mixer (also known as a Plow Blender) replaces slow ribbons with wedge-shaped plow shovels. Rotating at high speeds, these plows physically throw the powder particles into the free space above the powder bed, creating a 3D fluidized zone where mixing occurs mid-air. To handle lumps, independently driven high-speed Side Choppers (rotating at 3000 RPM) are installed laterally to slice through agglomerates and liquid binders.
Whether you are processing dry building mortars, spice blends, battery cathode powders, or chemical fertilizers, the Ploughshare Mixer collapses process times down to 3 to 5 minutes per batch, delivering unparalleled Return on Investment (ROI).

| Model Series | Total Volume (L) | Main Motor Power | Side Choppers (Options) | Discharge Valve Type | Investment Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Pilot Plow Blender | 100L – 300L | 4.0 – 7.5 kW | 1 unit (2.2 kW / 3000 RPM) | Pneumatic Flap Valve | Entry Commercial Tier |
| 2. Industrial Ploughshare | 500L – 3,000L | 11 – 45 kW | 2–4 units (4.0 kW / 3000 RPM) | Bomb-Bay (Drop-Bottom) Doors | Core Production Tier |
| 3. Heavy Duty Mass Blender | 4,000L – 10,000L | 55 – 132 kW | 4–8 units (Tulip or Multi-Blade) | Hydraulic Full-Length Doors | Heavy Capacity Tier |
*Note: Mixing volume is typically 40% to 70% of the total tank volume to allow free space for powder fluidization. Equipment metallurgy is available in Carbon Steel, SUS304, SUS316L, or coated with Tungsten Carbide for abrasive minerals.
Process Profile: Heavy bulk minerals (sand, cement) mixed with micro-doses of cellulose ethers and polymers requiring rapid, continuous daily throughput.
Optimal Configuration: Ploughshare Mixer with Drop-Bottom Doors. Mixing is completed in 3 minutes, and the bomb-bay doors discharge the entire batch instantly, maximizing tonnes-per-hour output.
Process Profile: Spraying liquid binders or oils onto dry powders (e.g., spice blends or fertilizer coating). Liquids naturally cause powders to clump.
Optimal Configuration: Ploughshare Mixer + Spray Nozzles + Choppers. The fluidized powder is sprayed evenly, and the 3000 RPM high-speed side choppers instantly break any liquid lumps before they harden.
Process Profile: Adding 0.5% of an expensive trace ingredient into a 1,000 kg batch, where absolute homogeneity (CV < 2%) is critical to product quality.
Optimal Configuration: Ploughshare Mixer. The intense 3D particle trajectory guarantees micro-ingredients are dispersed evenly throughout the macroscopic batch without segregation.
Process Profile: Blending fragile coffee beans, roasted nuts, or sheer-sensitive pharmaceutical crystals where breaking the product is unacceptable.
Optimal Configuration: Avoid Ploughshare; Switch to Ribbon Blender. Plough shovels are too aggressive for fragile materials. A low-speed Double Ribbon Blender provides gentle folding without particle degradation.

A Ribbon Blender pushes powder back and forth sluggishly (Froude Number < 1). A Ploughshare Mixer's main shaft rotates fast enough to achieve a Froude Number greater than 1. This means the centrifugal force exceeds gravity. The plow-shaped shovels scoop the powder from the bottom and hurl it into the empty top half of the drum. Suspended in this "fluidized" air zone, particles cross paths instantly, achieving macro-mixing in minutes rather than hours.
Certain powders naturally clump due to moisture, static, or resin binders. The main plows cannot break these hard clumps. POLYC mounts independently motorized, multi-blade choppers through the side of the drum. Spinning at 3000 RPM, these choppers act like high-speed food processors, continuously slicing through the fluidized powder bed and destroying agglomerates on contact.
A mixer is only efficient if you can empty it quickly. Using a standard butterfly valve can take 10 minutes to drain a 3,000L tank. POLYC equips industrial ploughshare mixers with full-length pneumatic "bomb-bay" or drop-bottom doors. When the batch is finished, the entire bottom of the drum swings open, dropping 3 tonnes of powder into the packaging hopper in under 10 seconds, leaving virtually zero residue.
Tossing tonnes of dense powder into the air requires massive torque. Upgrading from standard cycloidal reducers to heavy-duty, hardened helical-bevel gearboxes protects the machine from stalling during start-up under full load, but significantly increases the base cost.
Sand, quartz, and fiberglass are highly abrasive. A standard steel plow will wear down in weeks. Hard-facing the plow edges with Tungsten Carbide or High-Manganese alloys ensures years of operation but adds specialized manufacturing costs.
Basic models do not include choppers. Adding 2 to 6 high-speed chopper assemblies—each requiring its own motor, mechanical seal, and CNC-machined mounting flange—adds substantial capability and cost to the final build.
If coating powders with resins or oils, the mixer must be fitted with pressurized spray lances and nozzles. Coordinating the spray injection with the chopper operation requires advanced PLC controls, pushing the machine into a higher-tier turnkey solution.
