Cartridge, sausage and pail fillers with press-out feed. Discover how hydraulic ram presses and volumetric piston fillers help keep extrusion bubble-free.
In the adhesives and sealants industry, mixing the product is only half the battle. Once a double planetary mixer or butterfly kneader finishes processing a 1,000,000+ cPs batch of structural silicone, process engineers face a critical logistical bottleneck: "How do we extract this non-flowing paste from the tank and precisely dose it into retail cartridges without trapping air bubbles or destroying our transfer pumps?"
For the press-out machine itself, see our hydraulic discharge press guide. Gravity feeding is impossible, and standard centrifugal or gear pumps will simply cavitate and burn out. The POLYC downstream packaging solution separates the process into two synchronized stages: Hydraulic Ram Extrusion and Volumetric Filling. First, a heavy-duty press drives a precisely machined platen into the mobile mixing tank, pushing the paste out through a bottom valve. This feeds the paste directly into an automated cartridge or foil sausage filling machine, where pneumatic pistons dose the exact volume while automatically inserting the plunger or clipping the foil.
By maintaining constant, bubble-free pressure from the mixing tank straight into the packaging container, POLYC turnkey filling lines prevent product wastage and eliminate manual scooping.
POLYC High-Viscosity Extrusion Line: A mobile compounding tank docked beneath a hydraulic ram press, feeding bubble-free paste directly to downstream packaging workstations.

Process Profile: High-volume retail packaging of sanitary silicones, caulks, and liquid nails into rigid HDPE cartridges requiring plunger caps.
Optimal Configuration: Hydraulic Ram Press + Automated Cartridge Filler. The system automatically feeds empty tubes, injects exact volumes, inserts the plunger, and expels trapped air.
Process Profile: Professional-grade polyurethane mastics and structural adhesives packaged in eco-friendly aluminum foil film (chubs) for caulking guns.
Optimal Configuration: Hydraulic Ram Press + Automatic Sausage Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) Machine. Forms the tube from flat film, fills volumetrically, and clips both ends securely.
Process Profile: Heavy wall putties, thermal greases, or base resins shipped B2B in large plastic/steel pails or drums.
Optimal Configuration: Heavy-Duty Hydraulic Press + Gravimetric Filler. The press pushes thick paste through a large manifold, while load cells under the pail control the cut-off valve.
Process Profile: Micro-dosing two-part (A/B) epoxy resins or CPU thermal compounds into dual-barrel plastic syringes.
Optimal Configuration: Precision Lab Press + Servo-Driven Plunger Filler. Reduces micro-bubbles and ensures reliable multi-gram volumetric ratios.
Heavy-duty hydraulic gantries that force non-flowing pastes out of mixing vessels.
Directly docking mobile vessels from double planetary and butterfly mixers.
Volumetric dosing systems that index, fill, and cap plastic cartridges or sausages.
Fully enclosed extraction and packaging systems integrated seamlessly with the mixing process.
The extrusion platen is a heavy steel disc engineered to match the internal diameter of the mixing tank. Its outer edge is fitted with dual elastomer O-rings (typically Silicone or Viton). As hydraulic pressure drives the platen downward, these rings create a squeegee effect against the tank walls, scraping the tank wall clean and leaving the tank ready for the next batch.
When the platen first enters the tank, it traps a layer of atmospheric air between the metal plate and the paste surface. If pushed down, this air would be injected into the product. POLYC platens feature an integrated exhaust mechanism. The platen lowers until it touches the paste, forcing the trapped air out. Once sealed, the valve shuts, ensuring the paste is extruded smoothly.
The ram press provides the feeding pressure; the filling machine determines the exact volume. Automated cartridge fillers use a pneumatic volumetric piston. As the piston pulls back, it draws pressurized paste from the manifold. As it pushes forward, it dispenses the exact volume into the empty cartridge without messy overflows.
Basic caulks require low pressure. Pressing thick thermal grease or butyl rubber out of a large tank requires high-pressure hydraulic packs and a heavily reinforced H-frame steel gantry to prevent structural warping, representing a significant capital upgrade.
A semi-automatic filler where an operator manually places and removes cartridges is very affordable. A fully automated rotary system that sorts empty tubes, fills, and inserts plungers automatically requires advanced engineering and PLC integration, increasing the cost.
High-output factories utilize twin-head fillers. The ram press extrudes into a Y-shaped manifold, feeding two automated filling stations simultaneously. This effectively doubles throughput but increases the cost of the filling machinery.
Trapping air beneath the plastic plunger will cause the cartridge to ooze out later. Premium fillers feature sophisticated exhausting stations during plunger insertion, utilizing precision pneumatics to help ensure an air-free seal.
