Colloid Mill & High Shear Emulsifier: Specifications & Price Guide 2026

An engineering guide to sub-micron homogenization. Discover how POLYC's sanitary rotor-stator systems deliver intense mechanical and hydraulic shear to create perfectly stable emulsions and suspensions for the food, cosmetic, and chemical industries.

When manufacturing mayonnaise, cosmetic creams, pharmaceutical ointments, or bitumen emulsions, standard dispersers and bead mills are the wrong tools. Process engineers in these sectors face a distinct rheological challenge: "How do we force two immiscible liquids (like oil and water) to form a stable emulsion without separating over time, or how do we grind soft, fibrous solids into a perfectly smooth paste?"

The answer is extreme localized shear. The POLYC Colloid Mill and High Shear Emulsifier rely on a precision-engineered "Rotor-Stator" geometry. As the rotor spins at speeds up to 3,000 RPM within a stationary stator, the clearance between them is adjusted to mere microns. Fluid is drawn into this microscopic gap and subjected to devastating mechanical tearing and hydraulic cavitation. This action rips droplets apart down to the sub-micron level ($< 1\,\mu\text{m}$), ensuring long-term product stability and a perfectly smooth mouthfeel or texture.

Designed strictly to cGMP, FDA, and EHEDG sanitary standards, all POLYC homogenizers feature SUS316L stainless steel contact parts with $Ra \le 0.4\,\mu\text{m}$ mirror polishing, ensuring effortless Clean-In-Place (CIP) and Sterilize-In-Place (SIP) capabilities.

How to Select Your Emulsification Configuration

Scenario A: Food & Thick Pastes

Process Profile: Grinding soft, fibrous, or oily solids into a smooth paste (e.g., peanut butter, tahini, chili sauce, fruit puree).

Optimal Configuration: Inline Colloid Mill. The conical rotor-stator design aggressively grinds and shears solid particles suspended in liquid, featuring a micrometer-dial to precisely adjust the grinding gap on the fly.

Scenario B: Cosmetics & Creams

Process Profile: Creating stable oil-in-water (O/W) or water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions requiring heating, vacuum degassing, and intense homogenization.

Optimal Configuration: Batch Vacuum Emulsifying Mixer. A jacketed tank equipped with an outer PTFE wall scraper and a bottom-mounted High Shear Rotor-Stator head ensures the entire batch passes through the homogenization zone.

Scenario C: Heavy Chemical & Bitumen

Process Profile: Mass-volume continuous production of modified asphalt (bitumen), agricultural pesticide emulsions (EW/ME), and lubricants.

Optimal Configuration: Multi-Stage Inline High Shear Homogenizer. Fluid is pumped continuously through three successive sets of nested rotor-stators, progressively reducing droplet size to prevent phase separation in storage.

Scenario D: Pharmaceutical Ointments

Process Profile: Processing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) where zero contamination, complete drainability, and SIP capability are mandated.

Optimal Configuration: Sanitary Top-Entry Emulsifier. Built entirely from SUS316L with Ra ≤ 0.4 μm polishing, featuring sterile mechanical seals and no bottom penetrations to ensure complete sanitary compliance.

Engineering Anatomy: How Rotor-Stator Technology Works

Macro detail of bottom-mounted high shear rotor stator homogenizer head

Close-up of a POLYC high-shear rotor-stator head. The slotted architecture provides the extreme hydraulic shear required to shatter droplets.

1. Mechanical & Hydraulic Shear Generation

The magic of a Colloid Mill lies in the gap. The central rotor spins at up to 3,000 RPM inside a fixed stator. The gap between them can be adjusted down to 0.1 mm. As the fluid is drawn into this gap, it experiences tremendous mechanical tearing. More importantly, as the fluid is forced out through the precision slots of the stator at high velocity, it experiences extreme hydraulic shear and cavitation, which violently shatters oil/water droplets into sub-micron sizes.

2. Adjustable Gap Tuning (Colloid Mills)

Unlike fixed-head emulsifiers, a true Colloid Mill features a conical rotor and stator. By turning a micrometer dial on the housing, the operator shifts the rotor axially, narrowing or widening the gap. This allows the factory to run chunky fruit pastes at a wide gap, and then tighten the gap to produce ultra-smooth cosmetics—all on the same machine.

3. Cooling Jacket Integration

Forcing fluid through a microscopic gap generates immense friction heat. To prevent thermal degradation of food products or the flashing off of chemical solvents, POLYC Colloid Mills are encapsulated in a stainless steel cooling jacket. Circulating chilled water ensures the product exits the mill at a safe, controlled temperature.

What Determines the Price of a Homogenizer?

1. Machining Tolerance & Precision

The closer the rotor can run to the stator without touching, the higher the shear force. Achieving a 0.1 mm gap at 3,000 RPM requires absolute CNC concentricity and dynamic balancing. Premium machines invest heavily in vibration-free bearing housings, which elevates the cost but prevents catastrophic metal-on-metal collisions.

2. Sanitary Metallurgy (SUS316L & Ra)

Standard chemical emulsifiers use SUS304. Upgrading to FDA-compliant SUS316L stainless steel, coupled with electrolytic mirror polishing to achieve an $Ra \le 0.4\,\mu\text{m}$ surface finish, adds significant manufacturing hours but is mandatory for pharma and food applications.

3. Mechanical Seal Design

Basic inline homogenizers use simple lip seals. For high-pressure pumping or vacuum tank installations, the unit must be equipped with water-flushed, double-acting mechanical seals to prevent product leakage or air entrainment, pushing the unit into a higher price tier.

4. Multi-Stage Configurations

A single-stage rotor-stator is highly economical. For difficult emulsions (like bitumen or heavy creams), a 3-stage inline homogenizer—featuring three sets of nested rotors and stators within a single elongated housing—provides exponential shear, multiplying the cost but eliminating the need for recirculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Colloid Mill and a High Shear Emulsifier?
Both use rotor-stator technology. A Colloid Mill typically features a conical, toothed rotor and stator where the gap is mechanically adjustable. It is ideal for grinding soft solids (like peanuts) into pastes. A High Shear Emulsifier typically has a fixed-gap, slotted or holed stator and focuses entirely on liquid-liquid homogenizing (emulsions) and rapid powder dissolving without physical grinding.
Why does my emulsion separate after a few days?
Emulsion separation (creaming or phase separation) occurs when the dispersed oil or water droplets are too large, allowing gravity to pull them apart. Upgrading to a high-shear rotor-stator reduces the droplet size to the sub-micron level, exponentially increasing surface area and allowing your emulsifying agents (surfactants) to stabilize the mixture permanently.
Can I use a Colloid Mill instead of a Bead Mill for making ink or paint?
No. Colloid mills are designed for liquid-liquid emulsification or grinding soft organic matter. They cannot grind hard inorganic pigments (like Titanium Dioxide or Carbon Black) down to 5 μm. For hard pigments in paint or ink, you must use a Horizontal Bead Mill loaded with zirconia grinding beads.
Are these machines suitable for Clean-In-Place (CIP)?
Yes. All POLYC sanitary models feature smooth, self-draining internal geometries, tri-clamp sanitary connections, and Ra ≤ 0.4 μm polished SUS316L contact parts. High-velocity cleaning fluids can be pumped through the rotor-stator head, effectively scrubbing the internals without dismantling the machine.
