A planetary mixer and a triple-shaft mixer both handle very thick materials that a single-shaft disperser cannot — but they solve different problems. The planetary mixer gives thorough, low-shear batch blending with excellent wall scraping for filled pastes, sealants and compounds. The triple-shaft (multi-shaft) mixer adds high-shear dispersion in the same vessel, so it can both wet out powder and de-agglomerate in one batch. Picking the wrong one usually means either poor dispersion (a planetary asked to disperse) or poor scraping and entrapped air (a triple-shaft on a heavily filled compound).
This comparison covers the dimensions that decide a purchase: mixing action, viscosity range, batch size, shear level, discharge and finish quality.
Quick Answer
A planetary mixer runs two blades that rotate on their own axes while orbiting the vessel — a low-shear, thorough action built for very high-viscosity, heavily filled products such as sealants, silicones, adhesives and greases. A triple-shaft mixer pairs a low-speed wall scraper with one or two high-speed disperser shafts, so it blends and disperses in the same vessel. Choose a planetary mixer when the batch is too stiff to flow; choose a triple-shaft mixer when that same batch also needs pigment wet-out or de-agglomeration.
| Dimension | Planetary Mixer | Triple-Shaft Mixer |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing action | One/more blades orbit the vessel while scraping the wall | Low-speed sweep + high-speed disperser + optional emulsifier |
| Shear level | Low — gentle, no air entrainment | Low + high combined in one vessel |
| Viscosity range | Very high — pastes, compounds, silicones | High, but must stay pumpable for the high-shear shaft |
| Dispersion | Blending only; no fine de-agglomeration | Can wet out and de-agglomerate in the same batch |
| Wall scraping | Excellent — dedicated scraper blade | Good — low-speed sweep blade |
| Batch size | Small to medium (lab to ~1000 L common) | Small to large, scalable |
| Discharge | Tilt or bottom valve; clean | Bottom valve / pump-out |
| Best for | Filled paste, sealant, silicone, adhesive, compound | Pigmented high-viscosity batches needing dispersion |
| Relative capital | Lower | Higher |
A planetary mixer has one or more blades that revolve around the center of the vessel while also spinning on their own axes, so every point of the batch is swept. A separate wall-scraper continuously clears material off the vessel wall and returns it to the blend. This low-shear, thorough action makes it ideal for very high-viscosity, heavily filled products — sealants, silicones, adhesives, greases and compounds — where you need uniform blending without air entrainment or overheating.
A triple-shaft mixer stacks three functions in one vessel: a low-speed sweep blade for bulk movement and wall scraping, a high-speed disperser for wet-out and de-agglomeration, and often a high-shear rotor-stator for emulsification. That means a single batch can be both blended and dispersed — powder is wetted, agglomerates broken, and the batch homogenised without transferring to a separate mill. The trade-off is that the material must stay pumpable enough for the high-shear shafts, so it does not replace a planetary mixer for the very stiffest compounds.
A planetary mixer is the simpler, lower-cost investment for straight blending. A triple-shaft mixer costs more but collapses two operations — blend and disperse — into one vessel, cutting transfer time, cleaning and labour. The deciding factor is usually whether the batch needs dispersion at all: if it does, the triple-shaft pays back quickly; if it is purely a filled compound that only needs homogenising, the planetary is the leaner choice.
Note: final selection depends on viscosity, fill level, batch size and whether in-batch dispersion is required. Explosion-proof configurations are available upon request.

Not effectively. A planetary mixer blends gently with no high shear, so it homogenises a filled compound but will not break pigment agglomerates. For pigmented batches, use a triple-shaft mixer or pre-disperse first.
A planetary mixer. Very high-viscosity, air-sensitive silicones and sealants need low-shear blending with strong wall scraping and often vacuum degassing — exactly what a planetary mixer provides.
No. A triple-shaft mixer de-agglomerates and homogenises, but cannot reach the fine, narrow distribution of a dedicated fine-grinding mill. For true fine grinding, follow it with one.
The planetary mixer, for the stiffest compounds. A triple-shaft mixer needs the batch pumpable enough for its high-shear shafts.
Yes. POLYC supplies planetary mixers and triple-shaft (multi-shaft) high-viscosity mixers, and can combine them into a pre-disperse-and-blend line.
Yes. Explosion-proof motors, control panels and earthing can be supplied to match your local regulations — explosion-proof configurations are available upon request and should be specified at the enquiry stage.
