When a formulation is too thick for a ribbon, plough or disperser — think silicone sealant, structural adhesive, battery electrode paste, putty or toothpaste — the choice usually narrows to a kneader (Z-blade / sigma mixer) or a planetary mixer (double- or triple-blade planetary). Both are built for very high viscosity, but they move material differently, discharge differently and suit different products. Getting this wrong means poor homogeneity, impossible cleaning, or a line that cannot keep up with batch turnover.
This comparison looks at the dimensions that actually decide the purchase: mixing action, viscosity ceiling, discharge, cleaning, vacuum deaeration, batch turnover and cost.
| Dimension | Kneader (Z-blade / Sigma) | Planetary Mixer |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing action | Two counter-rotating Z / sigma blades knead and fold | Blades spin on own axes while revolving around vessel |
| Viscosity ceiling | Very high; millions of cPs (mastics, dough-like masses) | Very high; up to ~1,500,000 cPs with wall scraping |
| Wall scraping | Limited; relies on blade clearance | Dedicated wall-scraper keeps vessel walls clean |
| Discharge | Hydraulic trough tilt or bottom drop | Lift-out vessel / change can; often extruder discharge |
| Vacuum deaeration | Possible but less common | Standard option; key for air-free sealants & batteries |
| Cleaning | Harder; heavy trough, blade-heavy | Easier; removable vessel, simpler blades |
| Batch turnover | Slower; tilt cycle + heavy mass | Faster; quick vessel swap between batches |
| Best for | Very stiff mastics, rubber, chewing gum, heavy pastes | Sealants, adhesives, silicone, battery paste, putty |
| Relative capital | Higher (heavy construction) | Moderate to higher (vacuum option adds cost) |
A kneader uses two heavy Z-shaped (sigma) blades mounted in a W-shaped trough, counter-rotating at different speeds to knead, fold and shear a very stiff mass. The blades overlap at close clearance so material is continually transferred from one side to the other, masticating lumps into a uniform paste. Discharge is by hydraulic tilting of the trough or by a bottom drop door, and for the stiffest products an extruder screw pushes the mass out. A kneader is the right tool for the genuinely heavy, rubber-like and dough-like materials where lighter mixers simply cannot move the mass.
Note: the photo above shows POLYC's double-shaft high-viscosity mixer, which covers the same high-viscosity kneading and paste-mixing application where a Z-blade kneader would be specified.
A planetary mixer carries two (or three) blades that spin on their own axes while the whole blade assembly revolves around the vessel — like planets orbiting the sun. A wall scraper continuously clears material off the vessel wall so nothing bakes on, and the combination of revolution plus rotation gives thorough, low-dead-zone mixing of very high-viscosity masses. Most planetary mixers are offered with a vacuum hood for deaeration, which is why they dominate air-free products like silicone sealant, structural adhesive and battery electrode paste. Discharge is by lifting the vessel out (or using a change can), and many units add an extruder discharge for the stiffest mixes.
A kneader is heavy and therefore more expensive in steel, but its slow, powerful kneading suits materials that nothing else can process. A planetary mixer is often comparable or higher in cost once the vacuum hood, wall scraper and lift-out vessel are specified — but it wins on throughput for most sealant and adhesive plants because the vessel swaps in seconds and cleaning is far simpler. The deciding factor is rarely the sticker price: it is whether you need vacuum deaeration and fast batch turnover (planetary) or raw kneading power on a near-solid mass (kneader).
Note: final selection depends on your viscosity, filler loading, need for vacuum deaeration and required batch turnover. Explosion-proof and heated-jacket configurations are available upon request.
POLYC is a source manufacturer, not a trading intermediary. Every machine is built and tested at our 9,000 m² facility in Wuxi, where in-house capabilities cover CNC plate cutting, CNC turning, honing, rotor dynamic balancing and hydraulic assembly testing. Whether you need a high-viscosity double-shaft mixer (covering kneader-style paste applications), a vacuum planetary mixer for air-free sealants, or a complete adhesive / battery paste line, vessel geometry, blade type, vacuum system and controls are engineered to your formulation rather than selected from a fixed catalogue.

Both handle very high viscosity, but a kneader uses counter-rotating Z-blade blades in a tilted trough for heavy masticating of stiff masses, while a planetary mixer uses orbiting blades with a wall scraper and optional vacuum — better for air-free sealants, adhesives and fast batch turnover.
A planetary mixer. Silicone sealant must be deaerated under vacuum and turned over quickly between batches; the planetary mixer's vacuum hood and removable vessel make it the standard choice for air-free sealants.
Yes, up to roughly 1,500,000 cPs with the right blade and wall scraper. For genuinely rubber-like or dough-like masses beyond that, a Z-blade kneader is the more capable machine.
The planetary mixer. Its vessel lifts out and the blades are simple, so cleaning between color or formulation changes is fast. A kneader's heavy trough and blades make cleaning slower and more labour-intensive.
POLYC supplies double-shaft high-viscosity mixers (covering kneader-style paste applications) and vacuum planetary mixers for adhesives, sealants and battery paste, and can engineer either into a complete turnkey line.
Yes. Jacketed vessels for temperature control and explosion-proof configurations can be supplied to match your process and local regulations — specify these at the enquiry stage.
